Pawnee Police Station = Mathnet HQ

I was watching the episode of Parks and Recreation "Ron & Tammy II", and noticed something about the Pawnee Police Station.  You only see it at the start of the scene when Ron Swanson and Tammy are in jail, but there's an establishing shot of the police station.

It looked very familiar.  Parks and Recreaction is shot in California, and there was another show that was shot there about 25 years earlier.  The building looks a tiny bit different (and thanks to the wonders of modern computer graphics, had "Pawnee Police Station" added to the top), but the architecture design was unmistakeable.

Yes, the Pawnee Police Station was the same building they used for exterior (and interior) shots on the Mathnet segments of Square One TV, the PBS sketch-comedy math show, at least while they were still shooting in L. A.  Remember those?

In real life, the building is the former Los Angeles Police Station No. 11 on Yost Boulevard, now the Northeast Area L. A. Police Community Service Center, and home to the L. A. Police Historical Society Museum.  The building has also been used for other TV and film productions over the years.

Name the extra: L'Homme D'Orgasme

I help Joel, the webmaster of the SNL Archives, with basic fact-finding and identification for his site.  A lot of what I've done in the past is identifying smaller parts that are usually played by the show's writers and miscellaneous production staff, but sometimes there are prominent roles in shows that I can't put a name to a face.  Perhaps the most frustrating one of these is the guy who played Orgasm Guy's (Rob Schneider) French cousin in the Heather Locklear show from May 1994.  Here's his picture:

If anyone can identify this person, please let me know.

A brief thought

If CBS ever wanted to rip off Whitney, I propose the following show: She's So Wacky: a beautiful woman with no indoor voice (or capability to modulate her voice whatsoever) traps her boyfriend into living an ongoing manifestation of her hacky stand-up routine.

Seriously, though, every promo I've seen of Whitney makes me want to jam uncooked spaghetti into my ears sooner than actually watch the show.

SNL Up Close: 1980-81

The ill-fated 1980-81 season is one shrouded in mystery and a negative reputation that grew bigger the less frequently reruns from that season appeared in syndication.Like with 1981-82, I will be doing sketch-by-sketch reviews of the episodes this season. If anyone has information to contribute about the episodes, such as who wrote what, writer cameos, etc., I welcome it and will acknowledge my source in the sketch review.

SNL Season 36: Still ill.

I wrote last year about how SNL was showing signs of severe creative fatigue, with an over-reliance on recurring material, and a higher number of disappointing shows than in seasons past.I mentioned that unless the show took steps to fix some of these very noticeable signs of wear, the show is only going to get worse. SNL is still sick.I would argue it's a bit worse than last season, ever so subtly. There weren't any violently obvious symptoms like with last season, but the times when it appears to be firing on all cylinders are fewer and further between.

The staleness has been lingering for years now and the stench is starting to get pungent. At least when the show was at its worst they took quick emergency measures to fix the show.I do hope for next year that the creative powers-that-be realize they need to operate, or we're going to watch the show suffer and decay even further.

The 50 Best and 50 Worst Episodes of SNL: The Results

Here are the final results of the vote.  I got a total of 11 responses from readers on the message boards, Facebook and e-mail submissions.  Most of the submissions followed a set pattern, although a handful of wild cards deviated sharply from the rest of the group.

The 50 best episodes of SNL

-10 votes-

  • 1. Steve Martin / The Blues Brothers (04/22/78)

Even the original cast, Jean’s cast, Ebersole’s new hires and often time “featured cast members” sometimes came off like a bunch of nervous rookies, but these “new guys” came in like they’ve been on the show for years!" -J Coleman

The 50 worst episodes of SNL

-9 votes-

  • 1. Louise Lasser / Preservation Hall Jazz Band (07/24/76)
    • "When I saw this on DVD I thought Louise Lasser’s monologue was fake, and this was “a part of the show”… after reading tons of news articles and blogs I’m still not sure, but either way this episode was just sooo off. " - J-Coleman
    • "Lasser was a trainwreck of a host and the monologue was one of the all-time worst, dragging on and on with no humor. Alledgedly, Lasser demanded that the short film be shown on this show(Which was awful). Lorne apparently barred this episode from appearing as a repeat on NBC. Nothing memorable, unless you count Lasser speaking with a dog." -jojo
  • 2. Milton Berle / Ornette Coleman & Prime Time (04/14/79)
    • "Another awful host." -jojo

-8 votes-

  • 3. Steven Seagal / Michael Bolton (04/20/91)
    • "Arguably the least likeable host of all-time. His Andrew “Dice” Clay impression is so bad its funny." -jojo
  • 4. George Foreman / Hole (12/17/94)
    • "Wow. One of the worst episodes SNL has ever produced. The “Uncle Joe,” “Hulk,” and “Time Boxer” are just awful. Foreman could barely read off of the cue card and couldn’t even get the “Living in a van down by the river” line correct." -jojo
  • 5. Paul Reiser / Annie Lennox (03/18/95)
    • "As posters on Voy [one of the SNL message boards -editor] know, this featured the terrible “One Brother Diner” sketch, which wasn’t nearly as bad as the embarrassing “Sparkle Bright” sketch, in which ad-execs are disgusted by an interracial couple kissing. You know a show is bad when one of the “highlights” is a Q & A monologue mixed with stand-up from Paul Reiser. Yikes!" -jojo
  • 6. Bob Saget / TLC (05/06/95)
    • "Another potential top 10 worst episode of all-time. Pathetic sketches such as “Where in the World is San Diego, CA,” “Dante,” “Fast,” and the head-scratching “Boyz II Men” sketch make it hard to believe that this show wasn’t cancelled." -jojo
  • 7. Paris Hilton / Keane (02/05/05)
    • "A lowpoint in the history of the show, hosting-wise" -BillBrasky
    • "Hilton drags down the entire show. The material was terrible to begin with (Versace, Starkisha, approximately the 1,000,444th Trump parody)" -jojo
  • 8. January Jones / Black Eyed Peas (11/14/09)
    • "I would like to thank the brilliant guy (or girl can’t remember who said it) from this forum during the Live Discussion Thread that said “how can a show with 36 writers only have two jokes!”) I actually tweeted this line!" - J-Coleman
    • "Jones is easily in the top 5 for worst hosts of all time. At one point she froze and actually asked which camera she was supposed to look at. This show was so bad that they did a farting “Rear Window” sketch. Even worse, Jones managed to completely screw up the sketch. That my friends, is when you know that you’re watching a terrible show." - jojo

-7 votes-

  • 9. Frank Zappa (10/21/78)
    • "I remember when E! used to play re-runs of this episode and I was like “man, he must hate this show or something”. One thing that confusses me is that so many people on forums and blogs are defending him. Listen up people, just because you feel his music doesn’t suck, that doesn’t mean he’s immune from sucking in other areas." - J-Coleman
    • "Awful host." - jojo
  • 10. Malcolm McDowell / Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band (11/22/80)
    • "This episode was like watching a boring ass play."- J-Coleman
    • "Most of the '80'-81 episodes are included in this list." - BillBrasky
    • "The Rocket Report was a classic but some of the all-time worst sketches (Commie Hunting Season, Jack the Stripper, Leather Weather) are featured along with an idiotic cold opening involving an electric chair." -jojo
  • 11. Martin Lawrence / Crash Test Dummies (02/19/94)
  • 12. Nancy Kerrigan / Aretha Franklin (03/12/94)
  • 13. Sarah Jessica Parker / R.E.M. (11/12/94)

The 50 Best and 50 Worst Episodes of SNL

Since the May 7 show with Tina Fey is going to be live show #700, I want to make a list of the 50 best and the 50 worst shows, and post it the day of the live broadcast. I'd love to see everyone's picks for these. If you can reply to this post or email me your picks (please send to bjdwsmATgmailDOTcom) I will count your submissions in the final rankings. This should be interesting, especially if there are any trends with regard to what season the shows are from.

You don't have to send me a full 50 in your submission but do try to include a good number of shows in your message, and make sure that these are the best of the best and the worst of the worst in your opinion. Rationale will also be considered and the best comments will also make it to the listing of the top and bottom 10.  I will be posting the final results here, as well as on several SNL message boards I frequent.

Deadline for submission is May 5 at 11:59 pm

Bill Nye The Science Guy: The Early Years

I brought up the show Almost Live! in an earlier post; that was mainly a way to promote the launch of the fansite, but I'm impressed how solid a show it was, especially considering it was a local production by Seattle's NBC affiliate KING-TV and that so much of the humor was based on the western Washington/Seattle stereotypes. The show was also notable for launching the careers of Joel McHale and Bill Nye; I thought I'd post links to some of Nye's earlier "Science Guy" bits as well as some of his more notable sketch work.Mandatory safety goggles on!
