Social Distancing Diaries: March 28

Autumn usually has a few “meetings” with me here at the home office.

I’m about 10 days into this whole self-isolation thing; I went to work the morning of the 18th just to get some settings on my work computer adjusted to allow me to work from home, and aside from a handful of supply runs to the grocery store, I’ve been inside since. When I was between jobs, I used to force myself to go out to work on job applications (this also took care of the problem of the cat laying down on the keyboard when I wanted to work), but right now I don’t have anywhere I need to be, or really want to be for that matter.

Right before everyone started sheltering in place and the government started limiting gatherings, I finally got the results of my sleep study back. I wasn’t surprised at all that I had sleep apnea, and fortunately I had a day off that Friday where I could actually go to pick up the CPAP machine for my trial (the office is in Burnside, which is about an hour-long bus ride each way from where I live, and is only open weekdays during regular business hours). Right now the biggest issue I have with it is the increased noise when I try to sleep, but to be honest, my upstairs neighbors are pretty stiff competition in that category (I once heard the Universal Pictures fanfare at about quarter to 2 in the morning). My insurance also needs me to use the trial machine for a while before I get approved for my own to be covered, so it will probably be a little while longer before I have to get the trial machine back to the office.

I also had an optometrist’s appointment right around the same time, and for the first time in my life I need glasses, mainly for computer work and reading. The office is only open for deliveries right now, and as of last Friday they hadn’t been delivered yet, but I’m not in any rush to pick them up. They come in when they come in.

The biggest casualties on my social calendar (aside from the unplanned birthday thing) were lunch with a friend who was starting a new job the following week and a vinyl listening party that was already postponed one week. When this all blows over, I’m going to reschedule both as soon as I can (the lunch may need to turn into a dinner), but I have other ways of keeping in touch with the friends involved, and maybe I’ll even be a little more recharged for socialization by then.

For now, I’m keeping busy with work, books (currently reading A Safe Girl to Love by Casey Plett and She’s Not There: A Life in Two Genders by Jennifer Finney Boylan), music (I’m revisiting my Bob Dylan CDs in chronological order), DVDs and streaming (a lotta sitcoms), texts and chats with family (my sisters and I send each other pictures of our cats), and of course, cuddles with Autumn.

But that’s me. I’m curious about you.
